On the 17th of August the operations group from SIBM, Hyderabad with the assistance of the respected faculty, Dr. Rajkumar Pillay, had the great opportunity to visit the Zaheerabad plant of Mahindra & Mahindra (MM), located in the Medak district. It started its production in 2012 and has an Installed capacity of 100,000 tractors. Their value includes generating significant employment in the region with eco-friendly & and energy efficient operations. It has a solar heating system to reduce the carbon footprint, rain water harvesting system to conserve water and has a total power requirement of only 3 MVA. It is an investment of ₹ 300 crores by MM spread across 100 acres. The installed capacity of the plant is 100,000 tractors. This new plant manufactures tractor models in the range of 30 HP – 90 HP for both the domestic as well as the export markets, with all models conforming to emission norms prevalent in India, Europe, and the USA. The plant is a ‘zero discharge’ plant and all the buildings will be energy efficient with a total power requirement of only 3 MVA & rdquo.
The students went to the logistics facilities and assembly line facilities where they saw all the operational tools like, kanban card system, process mapping, automation, bench marking, central information system, demand management and capacity planning, poka yoke etc. The students toured the whole production process and noted the attention given to safety & quality in the assembly line. They also presented some solutions with a healthy discussion to the concerned authorities and left a lasting corporate impact on the plant. Overall it was a great learning and experience for the faculty and students.
