As someone who feels inadequate even by watching mock IAS interviews on YouTube, starting my MBA journey at SIBM Hyderabad was daunting. The competitive environment, high energy and expectations only increased my feelings of inadequacy, making me question whether I truly belonged here. However, these new beginnings have helped me discover effective strategies to overcome these negative thoughts.
In the beginning, I constantly compared myself to my batchmates, feeling mediocre at best, amidst their achievements. I realized that I needed to change these negative thoughts. One strategy that helped was keeping a journal of my daily achievements, no matter how small. This practice allowed me to monitor my progress and build confidence. Secondly, I focused on building relationships, I reached out to classmates and joined committees and cells. Forming connections with peers who share similar experiences helped normalize my feelings of inadequacy.
Another effective strategy I adopted was focusing on my strengths. Instead of dwelling on my shortcomings, I identified areas where I excelled at and used them in group projects and class discussions. This change in perspective helped me contribute meaningfully to discussions. Lastly, practicing self-care was essential. Balancing the rigorous demands of an MBA program and personal well-being is crucial. I made time for activities I enjoyed, such as reading and listening to music, which helped reduce stress and maintain a positive mindset. Rome wasn’t built in a day and I don’t expect to wake up tomorrow all free of these feelings of inadequacy. By challenging negative thoughts, building supportive relationships, focusing on strengths, and practicing self-care, I expect to gradually gain the confidence to thrive. I believe these strategies will not only help me in my MBA journey but will prepare me for the future challenges in my career.
