Voices of Reason: Inside SIBM Hyderabad’s November 2025 Debate Activity

The essence of education lies not only in academic excellence but also in the ability to think critically, express ideas clearly, and engage in meaningful conversations. This philosophy came alive at SIBM Hyderabad on 17th November 2025, when InkSleuths – The Literary Committee of SIBM Hyderabad, under the guidance of the Library Resource Centre,

organized an engaging and intellectually stimulating Debate Activity. Designed to give students a platform to articulate their opinions and refine their debating skills, the event succeeded in nurturing an environment where ideas could be shared, challenged, and celebrated.

The event began with a sense of anticipation as participants, judges, and students gathered for what promised to be a lively exchange of thoughts. The presence of two esteemed faculty members, Dr. Shivoham Singh, Associate Professor – Operations and Faculty Incharge of Cell of Skills – Pragathi, and Dr. Debanjan Nag, Assistant Professor – Human Resources, added depth and credibility to the event. Their experience and academic insight not only elevated the quality of the discussions but also provided participants with valuable guidance throughout the activity. The Debate Activity was structured into two rounds, with five pairs of participants enthusiastically stepping forward to engage with complex topics centered on economics and management. Each team came prepared, armed with data, perspectives, and a readiness to defend their viewpoints. The moderators of the session ensured the debates flowed seamlessly, offering clarity, direction, and impartial judgment whenever needed.

As the initial round concluded, two teams distinguished themselves with their articulate reasoning and confident delivery, earning a place in the final round. The topic for the finals—“A four-day work week is unrealistic for emerging economies like India”—set the stage for a gripping and thought-provoking battle of arguments. One team argued in favor of the rising global trend toward shorter workweeks, pointing to improvements in employee well-being, work–life balance, and productivity. They highlighted how progressive work cultures across the world were embracing this idea to foster happier and more efficient workforces. The opposing team countered with equal strength, emphasizing India’s diverse economic landscape, infrastructural limitations, and the heavy reliance on labor-intensive sectors. They argued that while the idea was aspirational, it might be impractical for a rapidly developing nation with significant socio-economic complexities. The audience listened intently as both sides presented compelling cases, demonstrating not only their preparation but also their ability to think on their feet.

When the final arguments were made, the judges offered their thoughtful feedback, acknowledging the hard work, clarity, and conviction displayed by all participants. The

highlight of the evening arrived with the announcement of the winning pair. Their well-structured reasoning, composed demeanor, and persuasive delivery earned them the title, sparking enthusiastic applause from their peers. It was a moment of pride, not just for the winners but for everyone who participated, contributed, or supported the event. What stood out most, however, was the atmosphere of intellectual curiosity that lingered even after the competition ended. Students could be seen discussing the debate topics, sharing personal insights, and carrying forward conversations sparked during the session. This was a testament to the true purpose of the event—encouraging learning beyond the classroom, cultivating informed opinions, and fostering a culture of respectful dialogue.

The Debate Activity reinforced InkSleuths’ commitment to creating spaces where students can explore, question, and grow. It showcased how debates, when conducted in a healthy and structured manner, can broaden perspectives, sharpen analytical thinking, and build confidence in public speaking. For many, the event served as a refreshing break from routine academic work, while for others, it ignited a newfound interest in public discourse.

The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks extended to the judges, moderators, participants, and the audience. As everyone dispersed, there was a shared sense of accomplishment and excitement for future events. The Debate Activity not only enriched the academic experience of students at SIBM-H but also strengthened the culture of knowledge-sharing and critical thinking the institution strives to uphold. With such successful initiatives, InkSleuths continues to inspire students to engage with ideas fearlessly, think deeply, and embrace the enriching power of debate.
