Let’s start with a question: Can you think of the last time you were unconditionally open-minded in expressing your concerns or viewpoints to the world? Or just being yourself without worrying about how the listener might perceive you? You’re probably having a hard time recalling such a moment, right? That’s how many of us deal with our emotions. Coming from a very conservative background, I have always been expected to strictly adhere to ethics and values. Traveling long distances by myself was never something I looked forward to, until the day I embarked on my journey to Symbiosis Hyderabad for my post-graduation. Following my aspirations brought me here, and it felt like a significant achievement. However, being a “Mumma’s boy,” it was tough to withstand the emotions on June 10, 2024. I had never been 1600 kms away from home by myself. The journey was filled with mixed emotions as my parents waved a final goodbye, tears rolling down their cheeks. The first night was undoubtedly sleepless. I kept calling my parents to distract myself from the realization that it would be a while before I saw them again. The initial days were tough. The unfamiliar surroundings, new faces, and the absence of my family and friends created a void that was hard to ignore. During the early stages of the induction program, I was homesick, which is a common experience for many students who travel far from home. It’s a complex mix of emotions, including longing for home, missing loved ones, and feeling out of place in a new environment. Recognizing these challenges, SIBM-Hyderabad has implemented several initiatives to helped students like me ease into their new surroundings, talking about the comprehensive orientation programs, student mentorship, Counseling services, cultural and recreational activities, and various clubs and committees It actually provided a supportive & comprehensive environment making is adaptable for someone like me feel more at home and less alone.I realize that while homesickness is inevitable, having a supportive environment like SIBM-Hyderabad makes the transition smoother within a month itself. The institute’s proactive approach in addressing students’ emotional well-being has played a crucial role in helping me feel at home away from home.
